Wen is deeply concerned about the health and wellbeing of UK Prisoners for Palestine who are currently on hunger strike in UK prisons, some of whom are approaching imminent death. No one should be pushed to the point of risking their life in order to be heard.
Hunger strikes have a long history as a form of protest when all other routes to justice have been closed. Feminist and anti-colonial movements have grappled with this history, recognising hunger strikes as acts born of desperation within systems that deny dignity, care and justice.
As an organisation committed to justice rooted in care, we believe people should not have to endanger their lives to raise concerns about imprisonment, political repression or state power. We hold concern for UK Prisoners for Palestine on hunger strike and for the conditions that have led them to take this action.
