Wen (Women’s Environmental Network) and its Green Baby campaign are deeply concerned by the findings that several baby dummies manufactured by leading European brands contain bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine-disrupting chemical linked to impaired sexual development, obesity, cancer, and reduced fertility.

Statement from Helen Lynn, Senior Consultant and Research Fellow at Wen:

“The discovery of bisphenol A (BPA) in baby dummies marketed as ‘BPA-free’ or ‘natural rubber’ is deeply alarming. Babies are among the most vulnerable to chemical exposure, and even tiny amounts of hormone-disrupting chemicals like BPA can interfere with development, leading to long-term health impacts including cancer, obesity, and reduced fertility.

“Given BPA was removed from baby bottles in 2011, due to safety concerns, it’s beyond belief it’s now been found in baby dummies”

“We are sleepwalking into the next health emergency, with the government ignoring the clear evidence linking toxic chemicals to serious harm in babies and children. Parents should never have to question whether a product designed for their baby’s wellbeing could instead be exposing them to risk.

“Wen’s Green Baby campaign found that nine in 10 parents are worried about toxic chemicals in baby products, and the vast majority believe harmful chemicals should be banned.

“Toxic chemicals must be treated as a public health issue. We urgently need stronger laws, greater transparency from companies, and decisive government action to safeguard our health and that of future generations.”
