WEN’S RESPONSE TO THE STATE OF THE CLIMATE ADDRESS

17 July 2025

Ed Miliband’s inaugural statement on the state of the climate and nature, based on new Met Office data, alongside three government reports – addressing climate change and biodiversity loss – signals a welcome step towards recognising the scale of the climate and nature crises. It’s encouraging to see climate commitments to a green economy, nature recovery, and access to green space made visible and public.

But something vital is missing: a gendered, intersectional lens. None of the reports address how climate change disproportionately affects women – particularly those from racialised and marginalised communities. From care burdens to exposure to toxic chemicals and barriers to green space, women are already facing the sharp edge of this crisis.

We need policies that centre the leadership and lived experiences of women, and support community-led action – from food co-ops and gardens to mutual aid groups – already building the foundations of a fairer, greener future.

At Wen, we’re calling for a Feminist Green New Deal: bold public investment that slashes emissions while redistributing power and resources. It means well-paid green jobs, universal care, community-owned energy and decision-making where women, particularly those from racialised and marginalised communities, lead the agenda for a green, caring economy that works for people and the planet. The government’s vision for climate justice won’t be complete without it.
