HELP SHAPE WEN FOR THE FUTURE

We’re on the look out for a Trustee to join our passionate and inspiring team

This is an exciting opportunity to shape Wen for the future.  Over the past few years Wen has grown in size, focus, and ambition.  We’ve developed a wide range of high profile, high impact programmes and campaigns, strengthened many of our internal systems and  implemented a participatory leadership structure.  As a Trustee of Wen you will have a significant impact on issues that connect gender, health and the environment. Read on to find out more and how to apply.

“We need all hands on deck to tackle the climate crisis and being a trustee of Wen is a small part of the solution. Wen is a charity where the impact is visible – it’s local, grassroots work that you can point to. We’re a small but enthusiastic bunch who are working hard to make a real difference to people’s lives!” – Wen Trustee

IS THIS YOU?

We are looking for capable people who can bring one or more of the following skills or experiences to this important role:

  • Local knowledge – experience of the borough of Tower Hamlets, where most of our food and wellbeing work takes place, OR experience of other community/urban work.
  • Intersectional feminism and anti-racist work – able to guide and support the organisation as we embed our values and work towards becoming more inclusive and representative of our communities and their issues.
  • Vision and strategy – in a fast-changing world, it’s increasingly important that we understand and deliver the greatest impact for women, communities and the environment.
  • Financial and operational oversight – we are looking for an experienced chartered accountant or HR professional who can help oversee Wen’s operations.

“Concern for the health of our planet is the highest it’s ever been. Wen has an essential role to play in ensuring that women help craft the response and are considered in its design. There has never been a more important time to be a trustee of Wen” – Wen Trustee

HEAR IT FROM A WEN TRUSTEE

What’s the most interesting part of being a trustee?

“Being a trustee is a challenging experience but it’s great to be in a position to think strategically about the charity as a whole and its purpose. It’s a way of applying my skills and experience in a new context, whilst simultaneously learning from my peers. And of course, I love contributing to a cause that I feel passionately about”

What do you think makes Wen different to other charities?

“Wen is a pioneer in connecting gender, health and the environment. Our feminist principles and how we try to live those out in our culture is quite unique: we share power via co-directors and a leadership team; we have working groups contributing to different areas; we’re trying quite hard to think critically about how we challenge conventional structures in society. At the moment, we are a board made up of women who also have busy jobs, when so many charity boards are dominated by older (mostly retired) men – but this means the challenges we face are quite unique too”

What changes have you bought or do you hope to bring to Wen?

“I have a real desire to broaden representation and participation in climate action, especially from people from minoritised communities. As part of this, I have spearheaded a cultural review of Wen from a social justice lens. We’re now in the process of actioning the recommendations from this review. I’m also really keen in moving forward the work on Wen’s overall strategy to increase our overall impact”

Describe where Wen is at?

“We’re at a really exciting time at Wen. We’ve expanded massively over the past year in terms of income and staff. We’re also working with a new leadership team structure that we think will help us be more creative and impactful”

We really hope you will find this role of interest.  Please read the role profile and person specification and apply here by the 29th November.
