BREAK UP WITH TOXIC PERIODS THIS ENVIRONMENSTRUAL WEEK
The period products you trust may be hiding harmful secrets.
Conventional period products like non-organic disposable tampons and pads can expose your body to toxic chemicals, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), fragrances, and metals. These harmful chemicals can disrupt your hormones, irritate your skin, and may even increase the risk of cancer.
Some reusable period products have also been found to contain toxic “forever chemicals” (PFAS) and high levels of silver, a biocide, which are often added as anti-microbial and odour-fighting agents.
Awareness is increasing, particularly amongst younger people.
Our new research shows that awareness about the presence of potentially harmful chemicals in period products is highest among younger women and people who menstruate.
In fact, more than 8 in 10 (87%) of the 18-24 year-olds we polled have heard about single use period products containing toxic chemicals and metals and 29% are aware some reusable products contain them too.
We’re moving away from toxic products, but there’s still some way to go.
Our research also found that one in three (34%) 18-24 year-olds have stopped using products containing toxic chemicals already or try to avoid them and one in two (51%) would stop or are keen to stop, but haven’t yet.
But more than three quarters (78%) said they find it confusing to identify which products are safer alternatives.
Read the red flags and Break Up With Toxic Periods for good.
That’s why today we’re launching our Break Up with Toxic Periods campaign for Environmenstrual Week (21-25 October 2024).
The campaign aims to encourage those who are keen to stop using toxic period products, but haven’t yet, to dump them for good. And to give women, girls, and everyone who menstruates the information to be able to choose toxic-free period products that are right for them, better for their health and the planet.
