While period inequality is often due to a lack of resources, access to period products, and knowledge around menstruation, for us to end it we must consider all of the systemic problems that intersect to perpetuate it.

Plastic pollution has a massive impact on our environment, with the single-use product industry having a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. Reusable period products have been around for decades, but left in the shadows by their plastic disposable counterparts. Single-use period products can contain up to 90% plastic. Fragrances and plastic in disposable period products can cause allergic reactions, and industry giants aren’t legally required to disclose all ingredients in products.

The fact that the cheapest menstrual product options are often those with the most potential to damage our health and planet makes this a social and environmental justice issue. It means people with the least power have the greatest exposure to dangerous products. A lack of access to toxic-free sustainable period care and education, has consequences for the health of people who menstruate and the Earth. How can we bring about change?
