Reusable Nappy Week is an opportunity for families and individuals, NGO’s, Local Government and all members of the reusable nappy community (including retailers, manufacturers, laundry services, and nappy libraries) – to come together and open up conversations about how reusable nappies can benefit both families and the environment.

Washable nappies can save families money in the long-run, their modern designs ensure that they are easy to use and wash, and they can offset as much as 38.2kg of single-use plastic waste per baby over 2.5 years.

Reusable Nappy Week, historically known as Real Nappy Week, first started in 1997 as a joint collaboration between Wen (Women’s Environmental Network), the Real Nappy Association and the National Association of Nappy Services. In 2006, its 10th year it attracted a record 905 supporters who signed up to back Real Nappy Week, including over 90% of all local authorities across the UK.

There are many ways to get involved, whether you are yet to try your first reusable nappy, or you have experience that you wish to share with others in your local area. Here are just a few ways that you can get involved:

For parents who want to learn more about reusable nappies:

Check for local events

Visit the Reusable Nappy Week events calendar to see what is happening locally – a demonstration, Reusable Nappy Give and Take, Nappy Natter, live talk, anything!

Real Nappies for London will be running two Reusable Nappy Give & Take and Fashion Show events: one at Coram’s Fields (North London) on Wednesday 27th April, 10am-12pm, and one at Real Nappy Life (South London) on Friday 29th April 10am-12pm. There will be opportunities to learn about reusable nappies and take away nappies for free, as well as meet local parents already using them. Local info stalls from Hackney Real Nappy Network, Nappy Ever After pop-up shop and the Waltham Forest Cloth Nappy Library will be there on the day.

Attend a reusable nappy demonstration

An online or in-person nappy demonstration is a fantastic way to get a clear introduction into the basics of using reusable nappies – how many you will need for full-time or part-time use, a visual guide of the three main types of nappy, and simple tips on washing and drying.

The team at Real Nappies for London will be running two online Reusable Nappy Demonstrations on Monday 25th April at 7pm and Tuesday 26th April at 10am. They will also be hosting an in-person demonstration on Tuesday 26th April 2pm – 5pm at Nappy Ever After – a reusable nappy shop and laundry service based near to Old Street – where you can see, touch and buy reusable nappies.

Look for a local reusable nappy incentive scheme

More and more local authorities are providing families with an incentive to help parents/carers trial out reusable nappies for less money. If you are a parent with a baby under 18 months, or parent-to-be, living in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Bexley, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Lambeth or Waltham Forest, you are eligible to claim a free reusable nappy voucher worth up to £54.15. The voucher can be redeemed to purchase reusable nappies or contribute towards a paid-for weekly washable nappy laundry service. A list of suppliers that accept the voucher can be found on the Real Nappies for London website and they too have their own support networks that you can reach out to for advice.
