Getting Active

WEN groups get active in all sorts of ways. WEN encourages legal direct action but does not condone violence or law breaking. Here are some ideas as to how you can promote and get involved with WEN’s campaigns.

Storm in a Teacup – Take action against climate change

  • Disseminate the Women’s Manifesto on Climate Change by hosting a 'delightfully subversive' tea party.
  • Promote women’s priorities for government and industry action on climate change.
  • Organise a stall or letter-writing campaign.
  • Show films and documentaries about climate change.
  • Organise workshops or talks about how to reduce our carbon footprint.

Cultivating the future – Promoting locally grown, organic food

  • Lobby for cheaper organic food for all.
  • Grow your own food and get other group members involved.
  • Organise gardening or composting workshops in your local community.
  • Join the Tescopoly campaign to curb the power of supermarkets.

Ending the Cosmetics Cover-up - Take action against dangerous chemicals in cosmetics products

  • Find out what is in your cosmetics and toiletries.
  • Organise toxic tours in your homes, workplaces and your local environment, gathering. evidence about health problems and sources of pollution in the area.
  • Use your consumer power to lobby companies for fewer and safer chemicals in products.
  • Organise fruity beauty workshops in your community and teach people how to make their own chemicals-free cosmetics.

Don’t throw the world away - Take action against excessive waste

  • Run awareness raising events at your local health centres or community centres to promote the use of real nappies.
  • Organise a fun demo, rally or stall in your High Street or shopping centre to demonstrate against excess packaging.
  • Write or talk to your local supermarkets about reducing excess packaging.
  • Organise events to get people thinking about recycling and waste.

Other activities

  • Fundraise for WEN, for example by organising collections, charging entrance fees for film showings and talks or by selling your own home-made beauty products or crafts.
  • Share skills, knowledge and experience with others.
  • Organise socials to get to know each other, welcome new members and discuss green issues in a friendly atmosphere.
  • Contribute photos and stories to WEN’s Local Groups e-newsletter Women’s Eye.
And most importantly…… have fun!
