Women's Environmental Network is the only organisation in the UK working consistently for women and the environment. Our vision is of

  • A world where women are aware of their ability to change the environment for the better and actively come together to do so.
Our strategic aims are:
  1. Empowering women to make positive environmental change.

  2. Increasing awareness of women’s perspectives on environmental issues.

  3. Influencing decision-making to achieve environmental justice for women

Formed in 1988, it is a registered charity funded by members, donations and grant support. Central to WEN's approach is the belief that women have the right to information to enable them to make fair choices. We also believe a precautionary approach is healthiest for people and the planet. We would encourage anyone who uses this site to become a member or make a donation so we can continue providing you with the information you need to lead a healthy, planet-friendly lifestyle.

Matrons
We are very proud of our six matrons: Maria Adebowale (since 2006), Josephine Fairley (since 2006), Sandra Gidley MP (since 2005), Caroline Lucas MEP (since 2004), Penney Poyzer (since 2005) and Hayley Westenra (since 2007) who lend their name and support to WEN. Like patrons, their role is largely honorary and they are not involved in policy or campaign planning, but they have achieved success in the environmental field and are an inspiration to others. For more information about our matrons click here.

Trustees
We are guided and supported by an seven-strong team of trustees: Susan Buckingham BA, MSc (Chair), Clair Hawkins, Judith Martin, Lucy McLynn, Zohra Moosa (Secretary), Catrin Stainer (Treasurer), Wendy Thomas. For more information about our trustees click here.

Staff
The staff body comprises a team of 12, mostly part-time, staff. On average there are three to five volunteers at a time, helping run the WEN office and campaigns. For more about WEN staff click here.

Groups and members
WEN's members are its lifeblood and it has a network of groups and local contacts around the UK, and a few abroad. In February 2007 there were 40 groups providing a space for like-minded women to meet, support each other in going green and campaign on local issues of their choosing or in support of WEN's national campaigns. Join WEN to be put in touch with your nearest group.

History
In 2004 WEN celebrated its 15th anniversary with a special event 'Global Footprints and Kitten Heels'. For more on this event click here. To read a brief history of WEN click here.

Our success
We have a record of being the first to raise awareness on issues, especially those concerning women's health and reproductive systems. We speak at national and international conferences and are invited to respond formally to government policy and proposed legislation. For info on specific successes click here.

We support
WEN supports a variety of other organisations and camaigns. For further details on these click here.
