Tools
for environmental justice day
Six groups have got together to present a day of environmental justice
workshops in Edinburgh on October 3rd. The day is open to anyone already
campaigning on justice issues or interested in them, in their neighbourhood
or workplace, nationally or internationally.
'Tools for change - it's only right
' will be held at the Quaker
Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace.
"A healthy environment should be a basic human right but it is
increasingly under threat," said Helen Lynn of Women's Environmental
Network. "This day offers community activists the chance to share
each other's experience and develop tools to work for social and environmental
justice and corporate accountability in Scotland."
Eurig Scandrett, of Friends of the Earth, Scotland, added: "Activists
in Scotland have a history of campaigning for environmental justice. First
Minister Jack McConnell has been convinced, has committed the Scottish
Executive to the issue and went to the World Summit in Johannesburg to
press the message. He needs to be kept on his toes."
WEN has organised the day with the Black Environment Network, Capacity
Global, Environmental Law Foundation, Friends of the Earth
Scotland, and the Scottish Hazards Campaign. Workshops will
explain the concept of 'environmental justice' and cover the law, national
and international movements, holding corporations to account, human rights
and poverty, participation of ethnic communities, popular education and
campaigning skills. The day is free and is open to activists, community
groups, charities, trade unions, Agenda 21 officers, individuals, NGOs
and not-for-profit organisations.
