Enfield gets the Give or Take bug… Women’s Environmental Network is delighted to lend its support to a forthcoming Give or Take Day in Enfield. To be held on Saturday 3rd July 2004, between 12-3pm at the Enfield Highway Community Centre, this Give or Take Day is set to get Enfield thinking about what it keeps and what it throws away! Give or Take Days are community waste exchange events, popular across Europe and increasingly becoming the 'in thing' here. They provide a good opportunity for people to get rid of furniture and bric-a-brac they don’t need and to pick up something they do need. And it’s all free! By re-using things instead of throwing them away, we save on landfill, reduce fly tipping and help to save valuable resources. Give or Take Days also offer people on low incomes the chance to pick up household items they may need. It's a brilliant way of keeping things that are still useful out of the rubbish bin and of bringing communities together. As Charlotte Walker from WEN says, “People aren’t that familiar with Give or Take yet, but the idea is very simple. Communities stage their own days and ultimately cut down on the amount of perfectly good stuff that is thrown away. Waste is a very serious problem and this is a very practical way of doing something about it. We’re delighted to support Enfield Council with this event.” At the event, there will be free recycling containers, subsidised compost bins and energy saving advice. Large items of furniture can be collected and delivered on the day. For more information about this exciting local initiative, please contact Nick Martin on 020 8379 2214. ENDS
