In 1992 the United Nations held the first Earth Summit, or Conference
on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio, Brazil. The Summit agreed
Agenda 21,
a wide ranging programme of actions undertaken at a local, national and
international level, and established the United Nations Commission
on Sustainable Development to monitor and report on implementation.
This year the World Summit on Sustainable Development, also known as 'Rio
+10' and 'The Earth Summit' will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa,
to review progress and decide on further implementation of Agenda 21.
Agenda 21 is very much to do with women, from women's human rights to
globalisation and access to resources and the impact of environmental
degradation on women's and children's health. Strategies for achieving
these goals say women should be involved in all decision- and policy-making
at local, national and international levels. Many of you will be aware
of your own local authority's work on Local Agenda 21.
What are your visions

planet?

WEN is sending rice paper doves enscribed with women's wishes for a healthier
planet to Johannesburg 2002 - see press
release for information on our recent launch of Action for a Healthier
Planet with doves.
WEN has contributed to a statement
of priorities for the summit on behalf of European Women. WEN co-led
a workshop to agree a statement on health issues, at a conference in Prague
in March.
