I'm not elderly or unemployed, I don't have any children and I am not ill, but I am a low paid care worker. It's not a depressing story of penury (although I fully realise it is for many) but for people who are on low wages the decision between eating and heating is just part of day to day budgeting. My partner is currently looking for work and we have only yesterday, for the first time this winter, put the heating on. We are environmentally conscious and will always put on another jumper before putting on heating, and we don't expect to walk around in shorts in winter, but for pure financial reasons we waited until it was really, really cold and the washing wasn't drying before finally caving in and firing the boiler up. We are also renting a very badly insulated flat and are two of the of millions who are paying high energy bills and who couldn't possibly financially justify making someone eles's property more efficient. The landlord doesn't care. So don't forget those in low paid work in badly insulated houses who have no choice but to accept that the heating only goes on in extreme cold for short bursts. A definite yes to WEN looking at campaigning on this, it's disgusting that so many of us are in hock to the monopolised energy market.

[...] There has been much debate surrounding the environmental benefits of reusable nappies compared to disposable ones. The Environment Agency’s 2005 report ‘Life Cycle Assessment of Disposable and Reusable Nappies in the UK‘ concluded that there was little environmental different between using disposable or reusable nappies. This came under much criticism from environmental groups such as Friends of the Earth and the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN). [...]

[...] The Women’s Environmental Movement, through its network of local groups and its innovative Three Tonne Club, helps people shed the tonnes of carbon necessary to secure a stable future. Just as slimming clubs help thousands of people to achieve and maintain their target weight, the Three Tonne Club helps people slim down their carbon footprint. You weigh yourself in at the first session, and follow-up monthly meetings focus on individual topics such as home energy, air travel or food, so that members can share problems and solutions. You can download a copy of the Three Tonne Handbook here for free: 3TC-Handbook. Go to WEN’s website for more: http://www.wen.org.uk/resources/ [...]
