Notes
Funding:
Council funded and partially funded by GO-NW (Government Office
North-West)
Scheme history:
This is a new scheme which was launched in during Real Nappy Week
2004.
Scheme:
The scheme provides discounted introductory prices for a nappy
laundry service, provided by Cotton Tails (registered costs and deposit
is paid for by the scheme), or 75% discount on nappy 'starter' packs provided
by Happy in Nappies nappy supplier for home laundry. Interested families
phone the Council for information and to registerinterest. Details are
then passed on to Cotton Tails or Happy in Nappies and are then signed
up to the chosen scheme.
A choice of type of nappy ‘starter’ packs is available; either
prefold or shaped nappies are offered in the home laundry packs. The prefold
nappy pack includes: 12 pre-folds, 4 covers, 1 pack of biodegradable liners,
1 mesh laundry bag and 1 soaking bucket. The shaped nappy pack includes:
6 shaped nappies, 2 pre-folds, 4 covers, 1 pack of biodegradable liners,
1 mesh laundry bag and 1 soaking bucket. Initially places on the scheme
are limited but the plan is to extend the scheme in the future.

Promotion:
During Real Nappy Week 2004 12 billboards in and around Warrington
town centre were used to promote real nappies and the schemes. Information
leaflets were sent to the local hospital maternity unit, doctors’
surgeries, clinics, pharmacies, stores with baby changing facilities and
nurseries. Sure Start distributed leaflets to health visitors and midwives.
Press releases about nappies and the Council scheme were featured in the
local paper. A full page colour advert was placed in the local maternity
and parental guide. Current promotional work involves having promotional
leaflets in bounty packs for Warrington hospital.
A press release about real nappies and the schemes has been included in
the Council’s internal publication, which is distributed with all
employee pay slips.
Achievements:
Since its launch the scheme has started to raise awareness of
cotton nappies - that they are an alternative choice of nappy with health,
environmental and financial benefits. By June 2004 there had been more
than 22 enquiries about the scheme since it’s launch during Real
Nappy Week 2004. There are regular emails and phone calls from the general
public in support of the scheme. Cotton Tails laundry service and Happy
in Nappies nappy company have benefited
from receiving new customers, promotion with the Council thus raising
their profile and positive feedback and support from customers, health
visitors and the general public.
Evaluation:
The Council make a record, both qualitative and quantitative,
of the enquiries received about the schemes. Cotton Tails monitor clients
using the laundry service and send monthly client updates to the Council.
Cotton Tails and Happy in Nappies will supply data on how many nappies
have been diverted from landfill. The Council follow up families using
the laundry service and nappy packs for feedback, and clients leaving
the scheme are asked to fill in a short
questionnaire for evaluation purposes.
Future Plans:
To extend places on both schemes depending on future funding and
further demand from families in Warrington. To provide a subsidised scheme
to socially deprived areas. To provide nappy packs/laundry service at
a further reduced cost.
