Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
Community Enterprise Grant (Caerphilly BC), Landfill Tax Credit (Cardiff CC), Waste Budget (Powys CC & Bridgend CC), Waste Minimisation Grant (Groundwork Caerphilly), Local Health Group Funding, Sustainable Communities Programme (Brecon Natl Pk).

Scheme:
Sustainable Wales have produced 'Dumping the Diaper'- a reusable nappy campaign report in English and Welsh. They give talks and presentations to Local Authority recycling officers. Gentle Touch laundry service has been aided by this partnership to ensure expansion of its existing 70 customers and long-term sustainability.

Promotion:
Includes midwife training programmes. There has been positive media attention - television and radio. A hospital contract at Nevill Hall Hospital has been ongoing for eight months.

Future plans:
To increase customers by 200% over the next two years. Negotiations are underway for a partnership project between a community co-operative, a local authority, and university to supply nappies for their day-care centre. The partnership has been approached by a large insurance provider to look at ways it can reduce waste in their nursery, and provide a staff incentive by supplying a service at a reduced cost to all employees.

Waste estimation:
Each used nappy weighs 0.5lb x no. of nappies used/week = 35 x 2.5 years = 1 tonne of nappy waste.

In addition the scheme is saving over a tonne of waste being incinerated in the hospital.

Community interest in this project has grown tremendously.

Jobs:
One full time and two part time posts. The scheme anticipates two full time and ten part time posts to be created over the next two years.

The partnership has recently achieved level II of the Green Dragon Environmental Award. Funding has enabled the purchase of reusable bags, water saving devices have been installed on taps and in the staff toilet. Utility usage is monitored weekly, and the first LPG vehicle is to be purchased in the near future.
