Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes

Scheme funded by Shropshire County Council, Sure Start, Fairshare Credit Union and Changing Times (the latter via
discounts on nappies).

Aims are to help break the cycle of disadvantage and child poverty in Lawley-Overdale commmunity by not only introducing
the idea and the reality of modern washable nappies but also prviding the economic means to acquire them through a credit
union nappy loan. This would mean significantly more disposable income for the families concerned.

Environmental aims are to reduce waste going to landfill, reduce the resources needed to produce nappies and to raise
waste awareness generally.

SRNN has contacts who deal with nappies for adults with incontinence, and can pass on enquiries.

200 families are in contact with Sure Start in Lawley-Overdale area. This figure is constantly increasing. It is hoped that one
in 10 will start to use real nappies (based on SRNN's uptake estimates from 2001) which would result in at least 26 tonnes
of waste prevented (based on SCC's figures of 1.3 tonnes of waste per child over three years).
