Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
Lancashire Environment Fund, South Ribble BC and Preston BC. Suppliers have also provided discounts on their products.

A recent analysis carried out by SWAP on behalf of Lancashire CC highlighted that nappies form more than 2% of the domestic waste stream within South Ribble and Preston.

Scheme:
A trial in 2002 for a nine week period was carried out involving 64 parents who volunteered to trial three nappy systems: washable nappies, laundry service, eco disposables - each for a three week period. A questionnaire had to be answered after each three week period. There was a group discussion after nine weeks. Results are documented in a report. Health professionals were involved in the scheme from the start to help recruit 'volunteers' who have come from different socio-economic groups.

Waste prevention:
Not estimated but there is potential to reduce over 2,000 tonnes of nappy waste produced in South Ribble and Preston. Over the six weeks of the trial when parents were using real nappies/laundry service, waste prevented amounted to 720 kg.

The South Ribble/Preston partnership won the 'runner up' prize (in the waste management category) in the Green Apple Awards for the project.

Future plans:
To develop a subsidy/voucher scheme via the two local authorities.

Other council involvement from Local Agenda 21. Public Relations and Council employees are made aware of the scheme via posters and articles in the Borough newsletter.
