Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
Scottish Executive (£9,990.00), Scotland unLTD (£2,002.00), in kind support from partners.

Aims: To develop a Scottish National Nappy Network.

Scheme history: The Scottish Nappy Network Project is a project funded by the Scottish Executive initiated by Sonia McLay,
Papillon Promotions in March 2003 and officially launced at the Scottish Nappy Conference in June 2003. The project was instigated to replicate a conference organised by WEN in Birmingham, February 2003. A spot survey revealed that Scottish players were restricted from attending the UK National Conference for numerous reasons including childcare, family commitments, and distance. Initially the Scottish Nappy Conference, held on 5th June 2003 World Environment Day, was set to be a one-off event to bring together nappy activists and networks and to explore opportunities to develop a Scottish National Nappy Network (i.e. eight nappy networks, three laundry services, one manufacturer and a growing number of retail outlets. But with support from strategic partners including SEPA, Scottish Water, Scottish Waste Awareness Group and local Councils and seed funding from the Scottish Executive, a high profile conference was soon in the making. Attracting 68 delegates, 11 babies, MSPs, members of the Scottish Executive and other major agencies and players, it was a huge success.

Scheme: This partnership operates as a Forum providing information, advice and promotional materials, events and workshops to support local networks and initiatives. Visit www.scottishnappynetwork.org.uk for more information.

Achievements: There is now increased awareness of real nappies and waste issues in Scotland. The successful national nappy conference has developed a strong Scottish Nappy Network providing resources and information in Scotland, affiliated to WEN. Details of a follow-up nappy conference recently held on 16 March 2004 can be found on www.scottishnappynetwork.org.uk. Other achievements include the setting up of a national roadshow, website, newsletter, E group/forum and Scottish Nappy Line (tel: 01324 878609).

Waste prevention: No estimate has been done yet but there are potential savings on 84,000 tonnes per annum of disposable nappies going to landfill to be made. This amount of waste is based on national waste plans and statistics.
