Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes

Funding:
Edinburgh Environmental Partnership Grants Scheme

Aims:
To allow new mothers the opportunity to try out real nappies while in hospital having given birth.

Scheme:
The Pilot Project began on 11/03/03 and ends on 29/06/03.

14 Training Seminars were held over a two week period prior to the start of the Project and were attended by 72 healthcare professionals. 12 Real Nappy Resource packs were distributed to Community Maternity team leaders for dissemination to their staff.

Three real nappy displays were set up within the hospital for the duration of the project.

Leaflets about the trial have been sent out to 90 GPs surgeries for attention to Health Visitors who have contact with women who will deliver babies at the Royal Infirmary during the Pilot Project.

Collette Healy of Nappy Days is carrying out three sessions per week within Ward 211 answering parents' queries and encouraging trial of the nappies.

Weekly prize draws are held for those who complete a questionnaire in order to maximise the responses. Private sector companies supplying baby products were approached to donate the prizes.

The Pilot Project has the formal support of Susan Deacon MSP, Robin Harper MSP, Edinburgh City Council, Edinburgh Real Nappy Network, Friends of the Earth Scotland and Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The official launch celebration and press call was held during Real Nappy Week 2003.

Success so far:
More than one third of mothers on Ward 211 have taken the opportunity to try real nappies. Full analysis of the scheme will be compiled at the end of June 2003 including the amount of waste prevented.

Future plans:
That the Royal Infirmary will adopt a Real Nappy Policy and fund the scheme itself.
