Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
Norfolk County Council.

Scheme:
Parents can buy reusable nappies from local/national retailers, mail order and specialist nappy suppliers. Parents who purchase real nappies or use the local laundry service send in a completed voucher to claim their one off £30 discount per child, provided the amount spent is £30 or more. If the amount spent is less than £30, Norfolk County Council refunds the actual cost.

Promotion:
The scheme is marketed through the distribution of leaflets to retailers, doctors' surgeries, hospital maternity wards and libraries and on request through word of mouth. Information is available on the county council website, in the council newsletters, press releases and radio. For more information visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/environment/waste/initiatives.

Promotional events are staged during Real Nappy Week and throughout the year. The Council actively supports small businesses set up to supply reusable nappies or laundry services. Nappuccino events are held once a month in Norwich and Diss where parents can meet real nappy retailers, see the large range of washable nappies now available, use a second-hand nappy exchange and learn about local nappy laundry services over a cup of coffee, whilst children can use the play area.

Evaluation:
Since the scheme started in April 2001, Norfolk County Council has received 2,400 applications (to date) for a refund on purchases of real nappies or for using the laundry service. A database is kept and this partnership continues sending out mailshots asking for feedback.

Future plans:
To stimulate interest in the scheme in lower income areas by providing economic and educational incentives.
