This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology. If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk |

Notes Funding: Herefordshire County Council, Welcome to our Future (part of Severn Waste Services). Scheme history: EnviroAbility, of which Green Nappies is a part, started off in a centre for people with learning disabilities. It sought to find meaningful and valued opportunities for them while also helping the environment and local community. Several recycling projects started as a result (tools for self reliance, book exchange, paper collection, aluminium collection, etc). Then a local health visitor stepped forward and asked about nappies. As a result, it was decided to try and set up a nappy laundering service. Three years on, in March 2003, the laundry service managed to get funding and start. Scheme: This is a nappy retailer with a local laundry service for Ross and district. The scheme is mainly marketed through midwives, Herefordshire Hospital, and health visitors. Leaflets are disseminated to libraries, surgeries, etc and as much local media interest as possible is sought. In order to minimise transport needs, a laundry only rate is offered to clients living in the vicinity so that people can bring in their nappies for washing. The laundry is in the same centre as the local mother and toddler and NCT groups: The Ryefield Centre. The number of pick ups and deliveries can be reduced and discounts are given to those who use one address for this purpose instead of individual call outs. Several people have volunteered to assist the scheme to help keep costs to the parents to a minimum. The laundry service is offered in a triangle between Ross-on-Wye, Hereford and Ledbury at present. The project is happy to talk to people from other nearby areas. Achievements: The scheme is in its infancy but nappy sales in particular have been very successful. Future plans: To develop a project to promote availability of washable continence products for older children and adults. To set up a website. |
