Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
The 2005-6 campaign has been funded through WRAP and Essex County Council.

Scheme:
Nappy packs containing 3 shaped nappies, 2 waterproof covers, a booster pad, paper liners and an information booklet (all worth about £30) are available to parents, on a first-come first-served basis, for just £5. The packs are ordered via a freephone number (0800 093 1500) and website (www.modernbaby.co.uk) operated by Modern Baby.

£10 vouchers (at the back of information booklets, ‘Choosing the Right Cloth Nappy’) are also available to parents within the statutory area of Essex County Council. These can be redeemed against the cost of purchasing reusable nappies, or can be used to claim £10 off the first bill when joining a nappy laundry service.

With WRAP funding, Essex County Council have recently employed a part-time Cloth Nappy Promotions and Education Officer. Overseeing a small team, they visit clinics and hospitals throughout the country, to educate Health Professionals about the choice of cloth nappies.

Nappy workshops are held regularly, with both health professionals and parents/expectant parents, to help raise awareness of reusable nappies. Teaching packs have been developed for Health Professionals, complete with teaching prompts, pictures and nappy samples for demonstrations, to help increase the number of parents being informed about the choice of nappy available to them. Any Health Professional interested in receiving an introductory talk and pack should contact the Essex Cloth Nappy Campaign on 01245 437318.

Information leaflets promoting reusable nappies are available in all birth registry offices, doctors' surgeries and clinics throughout Essex.

Future plans:
Essex County Council will continue supplying reusable nappy trial packs and £10 vouchers to parents.
It is hoped to develop further links with Health Professionals working within Essex, with continued distribution of the teaching packs.
