Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes
Funding:
Landfill Tax Credit distributed by the EEP Grants Scheme; New Opportunities Lottery Fund distributed by Fresh Futures.

Scheme history:
The Edinburgh Real Nappy Network joined with LEEP Recycling to apply for funding for a cloth nappy incentive scheme. Funding was secured in April 2003 and a part time project officer was employed in September 2003. The incentive scheme officially launched on 30th March 2004.

Scheme:
Parents have an option of applying for a free trial nappy pack or a cash-back incentive of £30 which can be used against the purchase of reusable nappies or against registering with the local nappy laundry. Parents must have a baby in nappies or be expecting a baby. Applicants must reside within the City of Edinburgh.

Promotion:
The marketing and promotion plan includes mailing details to surgeries, health visitors, midwives, National Childbirth Trust and other relevant community centres. Demonstrations will be given to relevant community groups and ante-natal classes. Displays of real nappies will be on show in various nurseries and community centres. The scheme is to be promoted to midwives and health visitors through a series of information/training sessions.

Evaluation:
Participants' data is logged. We also monitor how the applicant heard of the scheme so we can monitor the success of our promotional activity. A questionnaire will be issued to each applicant six months and one year after they apply for an incentive. This will monitor whether parents found the scheme useful whether they use reusable nappies and ona part time/full time basis etc.

Future plans:
This project has funding until Sept 2005 whereupon an application for future funding will be made. The first year involves the setting up and smooth running of the scheme and working with the local health board to ensure that reusable nappies are promoted to parents as much as possible. Other plans are to work on reusable nappy policies at hospitals, nurseries and City of Edinburgh Council.
