Notes Funding: Internal funding, Sure Start Aims: To alleviate poverty in low-income families. Scheme history: This partnership began in April 2001. It relaunched in April 2002 with a research project and trial involving 12 mothers and children from Ferryhill and Chilton Sure Start to trial different types of cloth nappies. Research investigated mechanisms for improving uptake of real nappies through improved publicity, mentoring, linking with the health sector, trial packs and payment schemes. Scheme: A 20% discount off the cost of cloth nappies purchased through Lollipop Children’s Products is available to any resident of Sedgefield Borough Council. Any ideas tested in the Sure Start area will be extended to the rest of the Borough as well - subject to securing funding. Promotion: Leaflets distributed in health centres and doctors' surgeries and given to midwives/health visitors for dissemination. Use of local 'nappy champions' to talk at parent and toddler groups etc. Articles in Council magazine. Achievements: The research project has given new ideas for the development of the scheme and a basis for funding applications. Through partnership with SureStart the project has seen anti-poverty gains, development of individual and social benefits. Lollipop Children’s Products gains new customers in this area. Future plans: Talks and training events proposed for health professionals and SureStart groups. |
