The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

Notes

Funding:

Diverted Landfill Tax credits which had been granted for setting up a laundry in Keighley which didn't run, so the balance was put into a part time post of Real Nappy Officer, this ran till May 05 with Seed fund for leaflets/poster etc.

Sept 04 to May 06 Bradford Vision, Environmental Partnership funding (via Bradford Council - national government grant to Bradford) to run low cost scheme in low income areas. Defra's Waste Partnership Fund now supplements this funding allowing the project to expand and work in strive to work across the whole district, both low income and better off areas. CRED is also providing funding, with the emphasis on access schemes and supporting the launch of the local nappy laundry. From these various funds the project has secure funding till Dec 07

Scheme history
:
The Bradford Real Nappy Group existed as a small community group who first met at the local NCT group for about two years prior to a post of Real Nappy Officer being created in May 2003 as part of BEAT (Bradford Environmental Action Trust). A steering group was formed to help run the scheme which includes the founder of the nappy group and the laundry scheme promoter.

Scheme:
Talks are given to parent groups such as ante/post natal classes, mother and toddler groups. Strong links are being formed with many local groups such as Sure Starts. Leaflets to all new parents to receive information about the project and the benefit of real nappies. We run a starter kit scheme called "get going, get real" where all parents in Bradford Met can buy a low cost starter kit, and a low cost scheme for those on means tested benefits and certain Sure Starts to buy their full set of nappies. We bulk buy nappies and pass these savings on to low income families. For more information visit: www.beat.org.uk/Nappy.htm

Promotion:
Local press articles. Project leaflet going to all expectant parents in booking in packs, community events, nappy fashion shows, talks at community classes.

Achievements:
Since 2003 when the project started to be funded we have become a real presence in the area, many more people are aware of washable nappies, their new styles, benefits and cost saving. The project gets several enquiries every week from individuals, does talks at most of the local NHS and NCT anti natal classes, has increasingly strong links with many community organizations, has had a good presence in the local media. We are run a anti poverty scheme to get nappies to low income families. We have worked very closely to obtain funding and launch with our new social enterprise nappy laundry called the Nappy Train. We ran our first major event in nappy week with a teddy bears picnic including a nappy fashion show, the event ran in partnership with local Sure Starts was attended by more than 500 parents and children.

Future plans:
We are having a big push to get the plans to set up a laundry service as a social enterprise funded and then set up. We would love to have a physical presence somewhere as a shop front where people can access information and nappies. This seems like a positive step with us working in very close partnership with the nappy service (retail and laundry) called the Nappy Train. Local feedback is that it is hard to access nappies, many local partially low income families are not yet internet shoppers. We intend to continue to build stronger links with the council to make sure nappy information gets into any waste information that goes to the public. We plan to strengthen our links with community originations and Sure Starts to ensure our new low cost schemes get out to the communities they are targeted at.

We are seeking funds to continue and expand the coordinator's role, and move on to be a bigger presence in the area.

With the success of our teddy bears' picnic, we plan to run this as an summer event each year, and do even better next summer!
