Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Notes

This partnership successfully applied for funding from external sources including the Millenium Commission. £5,000 of Neighbourhood Renewal Funding has been applied for and granted to sponsor a further project in one ward of the City in 2002 to bulk buy nappies and provide them at low cost to disadvantaged parents.

50 customers initially came forward to take part in a Which? Style nappy trial in 2002. 12 participants were finally chosen to undergo the first trial.

Awareness raising plays a big part in the work of this scheme.

Birmingham City Council has employed a part-time nappy officer within its Sustainability Team.

Discounts were negotiated for Council employees from real nappy local suppliers Perfectly Happy People and Little Green Earthlets. Ads go out in the Council magazine, Inner Voice.

Future Plans:
The partnership hopes to develop more strategic links with health professionals and widen the distribution of our nappy leaflet informing parents of the choices available to them.
