Real Nappy Schemes -
Promoting Waste Prevention Through Partnership

This index has been compiled with the generous co-operation of the many organisations involved in real nappy partnerships. WEN would like to thank everyone who participated in its creation. The information published has been provided by the 'partnerships' and there are not yet any national standard methods for information gathering and calculations. Publication here does not imply endorsement by WEN of any particular methodology.

If you are actively promoting real nappies in partnership with another organisation and would like your scheme to be included in our index please e-mail nappies@wen.org.uk

Get Real piloted the first nappy service into maternity wards in the Lister Hospital, Stevenage, in 1998 which is still successfully running. A similar scheme is running in Milton Keynes Hospital, Milton Keynes.

Ante-natal group talks have been the most effective way of promoting.

During the period of combined trials approxrimately 1,200 people have tried reusables in the hospitals. Approximately 300-400 people have used the Cotton Fresh laundering system. This amounts to 300-400 tonnes of waste saved by these customers plus an unknown tonnage saved by customers who wash their own nappies. On top of this, waste produced by the hospital has been cut by provision of the nappy service.

The Bedford Hospital Real Nappy Project official launch was on 1st October 2002 in the Cygnet Wing of Bedford Hospital, Kempston Rd, Bedford. Get Real and Bedford Hospital offered the parents of 200 babies a chance to try real nappies for one month free of charge using the nappy laundry service provided by Cotton Fresh Services. (Midwife and health visitor training was held on 5-11 Sept.)

Funding for the project is for six months initially and it is envisaged that Cotton Fresh will continue to fund and run the project in association with Get Real after the funding period is over. The administration, transport, training, laundry costs, servicing of the hospital with fresh nappies, will be delegated between Get Real and Cotton Fresh.

Incontinence: Get Real can offer advice.
